I used to think that writers had their entire book laid out for them. I imagined someone sitting down, opening a computer, and suddenly having the perfect idea for an entire book and finishing it in a month. They just wait that extra time to build suspense, of course. But after starting my own writing journey, I realized that ideas don’t actually work that way. Although, authors do love their suspense 🙂

Ideas can come from anywhere. Some of the ideas that shape my first book have come from the most unexpected places. Sometimes they come when I’m actively trying to think of something, but other times they appear when I least expect them. A small thought can turn into a bigger idea, and before I know it, I’m imagining characters, scenes, and entire worlds.

Finding Inspiration in Everyday Life

One of the most surprising things about writing is that inspiration can come from ordinary moments. A conversation, a place I visit, something I read, or even a random thought can become the starting point for an idea. Sometimes I’ll see someone doing something random, like accidentally knocking over a glass of water, and I’ll think, “that’s totally something Dahlia would do.” There are so many possibilities for a story; I can never seem to stop thinking about all the other directions it could take.

Sometimes I’ll notice a small detail and wonder, “What if?” What if something happened differently? What if a person had a secret? What if there was another explanation for something?

That one question opens the door to so many possibilities.

How Books and Movies Inspire My Ideas

Reading and watching movies are also huge sources of inspiration for me. Seeing how other writers create characters, build worlds, and tell their stories helps me think about my own stories in different ways. 

That doesn’t mean copying someone else’s ideas. It just helps me learn what makes a story engaging. It could be a character’s personality, a completely unexpected plot twist, or an important message that inspires me to create something totally different.

Turning Ideas Into a Story

Having an idea is just the beginning. The real challenge is taking that idea and creating something from it.

A book is made from lots of little choices: creating characters with personalities and goals, deciding what happens next, figuring out how different characters connect, making sure the story feels complete.

The original idea might change along the way, but that just makes the story stronger.

The Best Part About Finding Ideas

My favorite thing about ideas is that they can come from anywhere. Just one thought can become a character, a scene, or even an entire chapter.

Writing has taught me that inspiration isn’t something you always have to look for. Sometimes, you just have to pay attention.

Every idea has the possibility of becoming something bigger. The hardest part isn’t finding an idea—it’s choosing which one to bring to life.
